Emu oil and alpha-gal: your questions, answered

Yes. Emu is a bird, not a mammal, so emu oil does not contain any mammal ingredients. Amaroo Naturals is AG-FREE®: made completely without mammal ingredients, refined and bottled in mammal-free environments, and verified by independent third-party testing. We still recommend patch testing before regular use, especially if you have severe AGS.

Apply a small amount to a quarter-sized spot on the inside of your arm. Repeat twice a day for 7 to 10 days, as the American Academy of Dermatology suggests. Watch for any redness, itching, or other reaction. If you see no reaction, proceed with regular use. If you have severe AGS or are unsure, talk to your allergist before trying anything new.

Mammal-derived ingredients are the ones to watch for on a skincare label. Common examples include lanolin (from sheep), tallow (from cow or sheep fat), beef-derived glycerin, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, gelatin and collagen. Some can be plant or animal sourced and not always disclosed, so when in doubt, contact the manufacturer or skip the product.

Emu oil is a natural oil rendered from the fat of the emu, a large flightless bird native to Australia. It has been used for skin and body care for thousands of years and has a fatty acid profile similar to the oils naturally produced by human skin.

No. Emu oil comes from emus, so it is not vegan. It is mammal-free: emus are birds, and the alpha-gal sugar is found in mammals. That is why it is AG-FREE® without being vegan.

No. The ingredients are Emu Oil and 0.15% Tocopherol (Vitamin E). There is no collagen, gelatin, carrageenan, lanolin, tallow or fragrance.
